How Many Dogs to Guard a Bottle of Beer?

Do you know what Dog Trials are? The Boss says that I am a continuous trial but that's a different thing. Farm dogs in N.Z are a very important part of farm life as these highly trained K9's are invaluable when it comes to rounding up animals by remote control. A farmer with a whistle or loud voice can control his dogs from 100's of metres away and this skill is the core of numerous clubs throughout the country and a once a year National event which this year is in Wanaka. I was not allowed anywhere near this event when acyclinggranny and The Boss took my new wheels and went off on a Blipadition this afternoon. A typical exercise would see three sheep released way up a mountain side and the dog was directed from a fixed spot on the flat to go get them, bring them down in a fixed corridor, around markers on the flat and into a gated pen, all in 15 minutes and without stopping to sniff, looking at their boss, or otherwise losing the plot. Some dogs do this by barking continuously and others do it totally in silence by "eyeing" the sheep and just moving slowly as directed by their boss who cannot join them until the gated bit to close the gate.
While the dogs are waiting their turn they were assigned other very important duties and that is the subject of this picture.
If The Boss had attempted to get a closer shot he may have been totally ignored or overwhelmed in slobber. Oh dear what a fate.
