Trabant

I went for a walk around Kelsall today and spotted the rather incongruous sight of a Trabant on one of the country lanes. Not the sort of car you expect to see in the village. My original intention had been to crop the photo but in the end I decided to leave the background as the black and white wood on the side of the Oak pub acts as a nice contrast. I've edited out the number plate.

This particular Trabant is a P601 Kombi  with a 600cc engine and was built in East Germany in 1989. It can do 0 to 60 in 21 seconds. I know all this because it is currently for sale for £2,995 and I looked it up on the internet. It looks in very good condition but I suspect that it costs a lot more to buy now than it did when it was built.

According to the ever-reliable Wikipedia 2,818,457 Trabant 601s were produced between 1963 and 1990.The Trabant is recognised as one of the worst cars ever built and is spectacularly unreliable but it has become a cult car in recent years.
