Back to the beginning

The Hotel Asturias in Gijon's Plaza Mayor. This hotel was the setting for part of the 1982 film 'Volver a empezar' (Back to the beginning) or 'Begin the Beguine' to give it its English title. The film told the story of the first return visit of an exiled academic to his native Gijon after decades living in the United States. It is a low key, sensitive film, which won the 1982 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

This short clip of the of the film shows his arrival in the city. Many of the locations of my blips are shown, although most locations have been spruced up since 1982. The Hotel Asturias can be seen for a few seconds right at the end of the clip.
