The Thousand Yard Stare
Coz and I went over to Lyme Park (Disley, Stockport) in gale force winds. The skies were thunderous and grey so we decided that a walk around the house would be sensible.
What an absolutely fantastic place - architectural features that kept us both entrance, especially some fabulously ornate ceiling work.
No photos allowed inside the house, except in the Long Gallery. I chatted with one of the NT volunteers and she explained that it was largely to do with insurance purposes. She then added that she wondered whether that did come into conflict with the use of the property for filming Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth, Jennifer Ehle - Mini series from 1995)
In the Long Gallery, there is a 'stage' where the children of the Legh family were able to dress up and put on performances for the family. I found an infantryman's hat and Corin, like the very accommodating gent that he is, posed for me.
We did wander around the gardens a little, walking past the "reflection lake" (the scene of Colin Firth's Mr D'arcy in the lake in Pride and Prejudice) but sadly the heavens opened.
Nothing else to do except beat a hasty retreat to the tea room for a scone (jam, then cream - the Cornish way I believe) and a lovely cup of tea.
We are heading back next weekend. I fully intend to spend a day wandering around the estate. Fingers crossed for decent weather.
