Marathon
Smashing day in Brighton. Jemma and Scott completed their first marathon; Scott in 3 hrs 48 mins and Jemma in 5 hrs 7 mins. Jemma has an injured knee so simply completing it was a smashing achievement and under 4 hours was great by Scott - of course I was disappointed that he didn't carry my daughter round.............. This shot is Scott looking chipper at around half-way.
It's the first time I've been to this type of sporting event and I was struck by how supportive the crowd was. People were shouting "Come on Sam" based only on reading the runner's name from their vest. It also reminded me of the other event I usually attend in Brighton; The Open University degree ceremony. There was the same generous support for all those participating and even the people who were struggling towards the back were applauded and cheered. There was the same sense of achievement and I felt like congratulating anyone wearing a medal in the way I do seeing anyone in their OU robes.
This was a family day out for us. Calum was acting as sherpa for his mother while Rowan drove over later, with a friend, to cheer on Jemma and Scott. While we came home Rowan and Lexy were heading off to find a pub to watch the football - least said about the result the better.
And it was so photogenic! The weather was sunny, I have a sun-blessed face, but with a cold wind which meant that I didn't notice the sunburn until I got in the car. I've got plenty of shots to process including some of the elite racers and lots of the other runners and a few of my children. All up a smashing day out but my knees are complaining about a day of standing up and walking around. Time to veg out and watch The Masters I think.
