Our Second well ever. Special Visit

Very special visit

I haven’t looked up the date, but this pump was installed maybe in June 2006, meaning that for almost nine years, exaggerating a little, this pump has functioned perfectly giving clean water to this village all day every day.
It was the second pump we installed.
This makes our work in Malawi, worthwhile, even without anything else. Sounds a little crazy, but we appear to have come up with a pump that beats the hell out of the statistics.
Many pumps here fail in a few weeks or months. Few last for years. And fewer still nine years. Why The main problem is maintenance, or more precisely ease of maintenance. Many were never fit for purpose in the first place and most are way beyond the possibility of Village Level Maintenance or VLM as the experts call it.
The picture shows the wife of the village headman with her grandchildren.  Her son has maintained this pump without any help from Wells for Zoe over the years.

The only problem now is that too many people use the pump, maybe 400, so we are undertaking a programme of installing more pumps in the are area in line with the MDG’s for water so that villagers will, generally, have to walk only , in the region of, 500 meters to get clean, safe drinking water.
