Sail to the Moon

Port Glasgow Town Hall stands on the site of the former town hall which was demolished in 1961, but the original steeple designed by David Hamilton in 1815, still survives.

This morning before sunrise I captured this shot of the Moon beside the weather vane on top of the steeple. The beautiful copper weather vane is a six foot model of a fully rigged sailing ship and sits 150 feet above the ground.

In 1492 Columbus sailed to the New World. Only 24 people have ever left Earth orbit and journeyed close to the Moon. The last people to walk on the Moon were Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt, who left the Moon’s surface on December 14, 1972 and returned to Earth in their Apollo spacecraft.

Commercial flights are now being planned for 2018, which will take customers to the illuminated far-side of the Moon, and then witness the amazing sight of the Earth rising above the surface of the Moon.
