Iceland here I come . . . soon!

Another glorious day and we set off over the border into Scotland and the other side of the Solway. One of us wanted to see sea and the other to see birds. In the event we didn’t see an awful lot of either, but we had a really lovely day nevertheless.

We stopped first at Annan and followed a walk from the centre of the town and its impressive Town Hall and by the River Annan. It took us to the extensive remains of what was in its day a very busy and important port and ship-building centre. If it had still been Derelict Thursday, I would have had several abandoned boat to choose from! Then we were at Waterfoot on the Solway, where Robert Burns was, for many years, an exciseman, checking the cargoes of ships entering the River Annan. Not many birds and not much sea (tide was out)! But a fine and really interesting walk – the ones I like best.
 
Then we went on to Caerlaverock Wetland Centre, where we found of course that we were between seasons – most of the winter visitors were gone and most of the summer visitors had not yet arrived. So, not that many birds to see, but hardly any people either – we virtually had the place to ourselves and it was so peaceful. My picture is of one of the few Whooper Swans left, as most had already gone on the long non-stop journey to Southern Iceland. This one will be away very soon. Not many birds and no sea, but a lovely, peaceful few hours in the sun.
 
Finally we set off back and stopped at Powfoot, a quaint little holiday resort on the Solway coast – and there we saw . . . lots of sea and lots of birds!! So there you are – plans don’t always go according to plan, but you get there in the end. An excellent day!
