Leprous Rabbit?

These creatures (not the dog!) are the state mammal of Texas but are widely distributed throughout North and South America.   We heard significant rustling in the brush to the side of the trial and first one, then two, Nine-banded Armadillos crossed the path behind us.   They have poor vision and hearing as they were unfazed by our presence and in fact were closer than the wide angle lens of the iPhone would suggest!
