Snowball in May?

While it is obvious why this plant is called the 'snowball tree', or boules de neige in French, isn't it a bit too obvious? As they flower at the end of May snowballs is not exactly a good choice of name - and given its 25°C here not quite right. We need to think of another name ... any ideas?
