King's Lynn corn exchange
Opened on 9th January 1855 for farmers and merchants to buy and sell corn the Corn Exchange measured 170 x 51ft and extended back towards the meat and poultry market on the Common Staith. After the cattle market moved outside town the building was used for exhibitions, concerts and sports.
By the mid 1990s, the building was dilapidated, although still used for community events. A project to restore and enlarge it was begun, with the aim of creating a venue suitable for a wide range of cultural activities.
The resulting exemplary transformation, to an imaginative and flexible design, was reopened in 1996 after a £4.4million rebuild. The intervention necessary to retain the historic fabric is clearly displayed, while a brick extension has been added at the rear of the building to accommodate back-of-house facilities. The ground and mezzanine foyers are filled with art, and a cafe attracts visitors throughout the day.
Tried to get a warm glowing feel to this shot. Watched the Shaolin Monks there a few weeks ago.
