"8 kettles of water"

The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift in the world and was built in 2002 to link the Forth and Clyde Canal and Union Canal so providing a waterway between Edinburgh and the Clyde in the west.  It replaces many of the 11 locks which used to take much of a day to move between the two canals when it was built about 200 years ago.  Now boats can be moved on the wheel in only 15 minutes. Two boats can be seen being moved here as the Wheel is halfway in its rotation.  It is amazing to realise that the ten hydraulic motors powering this consume roughly the equivalent of boiling eight kettles of water to rotate the wheel a half turn.
