Taking a Chance?
There are two fords across the River Blackwater in the neighbouring villages of Wellow and Plaitford in Hampshire, and either can catch you out.
Fortunately there are depth gauges at both, but even locals sometimes get caught out here.
Either look innocuous enough and today the depth was less than 1ft. But with a spell of rain the water rises quickly. Advance warning to this one indicates that levels in the centre can rise to as much as seven feet. More than enough to submerge a car.
When the level rises, so does the speed of the flow of water, and more than likely you’d find your car floating downstream till it gets caught in overhanging branches.
I have seen cars doing just that, and a local farmer says he is often called to tow vehicles out.
Today, it should have been plain sailing to drive through. But I chickened out and did not risk becoming plain sailing!
