How the mighty are fallen

Felled by a cruel wind,
Still drawing strength from the soil,
And giving it succour.


... this ancient avenue of lime trees was devastated by the hurricane of 1987.  A few still stand but most lay on their sides with their roots in the air ....

Mercifully they weren't tidied up but left where they fell.   Some have sprouted branches from their upward facing trunks.  Rabbits have burrowed into and around the roots and all manner of plant and wild life have colonised the rotting trunks and branches.

I keep trying to photograph this fallen avenue, but it's so hard to get a sense of scale .....one day ... maybe .... for now you just have an exploring woozle to give an idea ...
