And so it was as hubby and I had a chance to climb up into this B-17 and have a look around inside, at a nearby air museum here in Mesa, AZ.
Hubby's father flew a similar warbird, called the Tinkertoy, that barely made it back to its base in England on one wing, after a raid over Germany in WWII.
To see the cockpit where he sat wounded and commanded the crew to bail out, which they did not do because the intercom was out, and to imagine the sheer grit and determination he used to get his men back safely was truly inspiring.
