Apostles Iris

This beautiful plant looks like a cross between an Iris and an Orchid.  It's official name is "Neomarica Iris", known as a walking Iris plant.  It gets the name because it appears to "walk" throughout the garden as it fills the area with additional plantlet.   When the new plantlet is formed at the tip of the flower stalk, it bends to the ground and takes root. This new plant then repeats the process. Thus, giving the illusion of walking or moving about as it spreads. The plant has been referred to as the Apostle plant because there are usually twelve leaves in a fan, and most Neomarica will not bloom until the plant has 12 leaves.  I just chose this plant for our garden because it was beautiful.  Now that I know  it walks, it will be interesting to watch.  I picked this flower to blip today because it is "Good Friday".  The fact that its nickname is Apostle Iris and it is a purple flower, the royal color for a King, I thought it was a fitting photo for the day.  I had a very special gift of a day off from taking care of Moira.  Even though I missed her, I appreciated the day I had to relax, read and pray preparing for Easter Sunday.
