Spot the fake!

The title is unfair, because this photo was taken in Poundbury, Dorset, where nearly all the buildings are in versions - occasionally pastiches - of a wide variety of architectural styles.  Apart from a few century-old farm cottages and farm buildings, everything within this development has been built within the last 20 years.

The most prominent house here is a poor pastiche of "Strawberry Hill Gothic", a style initiated in 1749, which was itself a rather delightful pastiche of Gothic architecture.  The bizarre arrangement of windows in its front (left) facade makes the house look seriously unbalanced.

From the positioning of its upper windows, it looks as if this house even has a flat roof.  Who in his right mind would choose to buy such a house?

It's well worth checking out Strawberry Hill Gothic on Google: you may even learn to love it.
