Place Saint-Louis
Aigues-Mortes is one of the best preserved walled city in France like Carcassonne. It is in the Petite Camargue in the French province of Languedoc. Nowadays, it is a few kilometres away from the Mediterranean sea. The nearest port is Le Grau-du-Roi. But in the Middle Ages it was a royal port. King Louis IX - later called 'Saint Louis - sailed from there on two successive crusades (7th & 8th).
The central square with the statue of King Louis IX is called Place Saint-Louis . This blip shows the statue pedestal showing a dolphin and the prow of a ship commemorating the crusades. The church in the background is an old romanesque sanctuary from the XII century.
