Always cut on the waste wood side of the mark. Drummed into me by my father and then my woodwork teacher. Penalty for contravening this rule at school was 2 wallops with the belt, or repeat offences at 4 strokes, really painful. But don't show it hurts, which stood me in good stead re hiding my feelings, even half a century later.
