Pomeranian Goose .....
is my best guess.
Since the sun was brightly shining today we decided to venture out and check out some new birding areas that we have heard about.
After lunch we headed out to Martin's Creek Land Management area. This area is near the Delaware River on the border of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. We weren't too impressed at the start as the trail was not marked properly and wasn't heading in the right direction.
So, we got back in the car and went to a nearby boat launch area. Here at least we saw some more bluebirds, seagulls and a hawk. After leaving the boat launch area we drove over the Delaware river into Belvidere, New Jersey. And then back over the bridge.
We parked the car on the Pennsylvania side of the bridge and walked half way across it. That was when I spotted this goose (along with it's mate) down in the river. Never having seen a goose with this coloring and markings, I had to look it up. Well, it's not in our bird book! Thank goodness for Google!
I have tentatively identified it as a Pomeranian Goose, but I am not 100 percent sure. According to Wikipedia: In their native Germany, Pomeranian Geese are a "utilitarian goose breed" represented white, gray, saddleback buff, and saddleback gray varieties.
The American Saddleback Pomeranian which is almost the sole representative of this breed in the United States is recognized by the American Poultry Association. Its head, back, and flanks are light gray or beige. The bird has an all-white body with the colored feathers on its tail edged in near-white. It is uncommon enough that the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy regards its status as "critical".
