And...Momma Waits
A month or so ago, fellow blipper CrazySteve told me about a boat launch where there were usually birds to be found. On the way to the launch, I saw a big Ospreys nest, and vowed to return to shoot it. This is what is left of the nest. What could have happened? An Eagle? An Owl? A "herd" of buzzards?
The homeowner that lived under the telephone pole was out in his yard. I yelled..."What happened to the nest?"
He told me that on Friday night, during a big rain storm, the wires shorted out, and both the wires and the nest caught on fire. Pieces of the nest fell to the ground. Included in the pieces were 3 baby ospreys, who fell to their death.
So sad. She cried out to her mate (who was circling overhead)..."What do we do now? What do we do?" She then looked down at me, as if to ask..."Where are my babies? Do you know?" Her big osprey eyes clearly conveyed bewilderment and heartbreak.
On Monday, the power company will replace the wires and the pole, and they will also put up an osprey platform. I hope the unfortunate couple decide to rebuild.
Why was she still up there...waiting and crying for her babies?
Because...that's what mothers do.
After the tragedy to start the day, I felt like I needed some color at the garden center.
