Make do and Mend
One of the displays at Upton House, a National Trust property between Stratford & Banbury. In the early days of the 2nd world war the staff of a merchant bank were evacuated here and must have found it a great change compared to their previous lives in London. Normal life had to function to some extent, so the exhibition has some brilliant examples of how people just 'got on with it' in real auserity.
A couple of others starting here ... it is interesting watching children born into a world of technology trying to use an old desk typewriter ...
Gill has volunteered to help demonstrate making up clothes from 1940s patterns.
