B came over this afternoon with her dog and another she was looking after while its owners were away.  We walked over the farm and went to inspect where the men had been digging out the ditches and clearing a space for a new gate.  The ditches are so important here as they empty the water from the drains that run under the fields.  We are on heavy clay here and it is so easy to become waterlogged.  We arrived back for more tea and crumpets!

The sad news in the evening from Toronto that N's cousin had died yesterday. He was well into his 80's and had been ill for some time.  He will be sadly missed.
