Sydney 1 - Melbourne 1
Melbourne redeemed itself today with an early goal.
We found ourselves at the National Gallery of Victoria this morning. It’s an amazing building and at the entrance a water wall, which provides endless fascination for those of all ages, whether they happen to be looking out or looking in.
The gallery was hosting an exhibition of Chinese art and artefacts on loan from the Palace Museum, Beijing. A Golden Age of China; Qianlong Emperor, 1736–1795, told the story of China’s foremost art collector and 4th Emperor of the Quin Dynasty. On display were garments, weapons, paintings and calligraphy as well as ceramics and jewellery. An unexpected delight.
For lunch, a Dan recommendation - Turkish gozlemes filled with spinach and feta - from a market stall outside the gallery.
We spent the afternoon wandering round the Botanical Gardens before braving the crowds to get back to our apartment. Again the place was crowded - department stores are open all day (even though it’s sunday) and Melbourne was hosting the final of the cricket world cup, between Australia and New Zealand.
