Souter lighthouse

Went to Tynemouth second hand market to hunt for bargains this morning. When I've been looking for something particular in the past, I've struggled to find it. Today I saw loads of things I've searched for before- typical!

I've been a National Trust member for years but hadn't yet been inside Souter lighthouse so I went today. I love lighthouses and this red and white one is particularly pretty, with its white and green buildings. We climbed to the top of the lighthouse and had a fantastic view north past St Marys lighthouse as far as Blyth and south past Sunderland. I really regretted not taking my proper camera!! Beside the lighthouse are green fields and the elderly volunteer told us that there used to be a whole village here that Id never known about! She told us that Marsden village was at the cliff edge beside the lighthouse and rows of pit houses were home to workers of the nearby mine. 700 people lived there but once the mine closed in 1968, the entire village was demolished including the school and post-office!
I'll have to ask my nanna if she remembers the village that vanished.
