Golden Gate

At 1.7 miles long the Golden Gate Bridge is the ninth longest suspension bridge in the world and weighs in at around 887,000 tons. There are approximately 600,000 rivets in each of the bridges twin towers and over 41 million folk cross each year.
Some travellers sadly don’t complete the journey over the San Francisco Bay.
A popular destination for the suicidal, safety barriers have recently been installed under the roadway in an effort to reduce the annual toll of jumpers.
Since it opened in 1937, more than 1,500 people have killed themselves by jumping off the bridge. In 2013 alone 46 deaths were recorded. Many more are feared to be unrecorded.

German airline pilot Andreas Lubitz is shown here in a relaxed pose alongside the northern approach road.
What was going through his mind?
