Not My Job

The builders have just finished painting this gable wall in Kimberley St, Belfast. It's opposite the site of the Kimberley Inn, which is where leading loyalist paramilitaries Raymond Elder and Joe Bratty used to drink until they were killed by the IRA in the 90s. When I lived in Kimberley St. in 2003, UDA man Roy Green was shot dead outside the bar by other members of the UDA.

This historical context may explain why the builders have painted round the remains of a plaque (for want of a better word), rather than removing it. The plaque used to consist of a red fist with the words underneath: 'Ormeau Road Freedom Fighters.' The bit that remains says 'fighters.'
