Another Ophrys

Our last day on Cyprus, and once again we seemed to pack a lot in. Pete and I had our routine early walk on the nearby hillside, where this particular orchid was locally frequent. I believe this is Ophrys umbilicata subsp. attica, although it is also seems to be known as O.astarte and O.attica by some. Very confusing!

We then set off to Peristerona, a village in the low foothills of the Troodos Mountains, where there was a gorge. Most of this was fairly inaccessible, but we found a route along the top, and briefly saw a Long-legged Buzzard, one of only two large raptors seen during our stay. We then strolled round the village, though unfortunately the Byzantine Museum was shut.

We stopped in Polis on the way back, which is the main town on that stretch of coast. Chris wanted to buy a gift for Lizzy, and eventually we found a small gift shop owned by an elderly Cypriot woman that had some rather nice silver jewelry at reasonable prices. And then it was back to the villa to laze in the sun, and pack, before going out for our final meal at Molo's- grilled octopus and dolmades for me - the perfect end to a perfect week!
