Evert's Day Out

Evert, our Black Angus bull, is Chris's pride and joy. He's the fellow who took off across the farm yesterday, having spotted some appealing cows in the distance which happened to be on our neighbour's property. First he danced around the guava tree alongside the driveway and reduced it in size, then headed straight for Grandpa's prize garden. Chris and the border collies managed to coax him back into his camp near the dairy, but as Evert entered, his companion the Jersey heifer slipped out the open gate. This was too much for Evert. He burst out, even more energised, and set off at speed for the distant cattle, breaking through gates and jumping fences with ease. Black Angus are terrific jumpers; I would never have believed it unless I'd seen it myself!
Fortunately he stopped short of trespassing and stayed in one of our far camps for the rest of the day (he was going nowhere!). Chris cleverly brought the milking herd around to join the bull and calm him down, as no herd members were in season. It worked. Later that afternoon Evert was happy to walk up to the milking parlour with the ladies, whereupon Chris and the collies guided him back into his night pen, where you see him now.
