ice saucers

i recently had the pleasure of enjoying a fellow blipper's posting of ice going out on a lake in finland.  a beautiful photo showing large shards of ice buckled onto the shore.  that image has stayed with me.

i went to the shore today to check on our ice.  we get very few hard edged pieces.  most are rounded.  some are even spheres.  i can only assume that it is the ocean waves that tumble these chunks.  a couple of weeks ago i found these strange "flying saucer" ice forms.  they are about six feet in diameter.  i understand how they could be round, but the fact that these two (and a number of others) are formed like saucers and balance like tops on the shore ice is mystifying.

once again, kudos to blip and their good folk.  i am learning so much, one photo at a time.
