Semington (Wednesday 18th March 2015)

I took to the canal once again on Wednesday afternoon, and parked in Semington, near Semington Swing Bridge on the Kennet and Avon. I walked as far as the bridge at Whaddon Lane, enjoying the sun and tranquility, at which point I recognised a section I had walked before from the other direction. On the way back I watched two moorhens having an energetic scrap, and had a chat to one of the boaters who was on board The Merchant Of Little Venice, a nice reference to the moorings of that name in Paddington.

This was taken at the swing bridge, looking back at the stretch I had just walked. It had been quite warm but bracing in the fresh air and I was quite tired afterwards although it had not been a long walk.

Martha & The Vandellas - Nowhere To Run (recorded 24 October 1964, Hitsville Studio A, Detroit MI)
On this day 50 years ago, in 1965, the Motown Revue package tour arrived in the UK for a three week tour. On the same bill were The Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Stevie Wonder and the Earl Van Dyke Sextet. The tour was timed to coincide with the launch of the UK label Tamla Motown, but the acts were not sufficiently well known and ticket sales were slack, and this phenomenal single stalled at no. 26 in the UK charts.
Dusty Springfield and Vicki Wickham (of Ready Steady Go! fame) managed to get an hour-long TV special recorded during the tour and this was broadcast in April 1965
