Turnpike and Tolls

Out on my run I passed this building. Back in the 1700 the local parishes were responsible for the upkeep of the 'roads', toll fees were introduced.
Steanor Bottom Bar was one of the collection points, the stone above the door details how much it will cost you to use the road
