ready for a game of Chess; waiting for a player

It snowed yesterday until about midnight, but, the sun is out today
and even though the temperature is still close to freezing everyone
is shopping in Union Square Market.  The Chess players set up
close to the market and wait for anyone who might want to challenge
them.  This fellow is early and the first to show up.  He's cleared
his spot and set up his board and now he waits, but, not long.
