Banks
Into Manchester this morning - we had things to do in banks. Four of them to be precise.
Then we decided that we would have lunch in town. We had never been to Jamies, so ended up there. A good meal, a popular place.
J pointed out that this building had been her first bank branch in Manchester, way back when, when it was the Midland Bank (subsumed into HSBC subsequently, the branch now in St Anne's Square). The large windows and cavernous interior make Jamies a light and airy place inside. These old bank buildings have a solidity about them, with quality finishes inside and out (deliberate - you can trust us with your money. Maybe not so appropriate for a modern bank now we know more about there more recent operations).
The photo ....... Ship Canal House next door. This figure stands over the main door. The building was one of the tallest in the UK when it was completed in 1927, and was the HQ of the Ship Canal Company till 1969. Interestingly the top of the building is set back to comply with legislation at the time which effectively prevented buldings from rising sheer above the pavement above a certain height. How times have changed ......
