Hon in Edinburgh

It's 1990 and they want their reset switch back!

I have been very remiss in uploading pictures to Blipfoto thanks to an annoying problem with my PC whereby it would randomly power down and restart all by itself.  So off to the Internet to find out why.  Probably a big mistake because I ended up having to eliminate (in no particular order) the following suspects: Mains power strip, PSU, memory chips, motherboard fans and CPU fan.  I was this close to deciding it was a fault with the motherboard and resigning myself into getting a new PC.  Which, since there's no point in getting a new PC without it being a proper upgrade, had me on the slippery slope towards silliness such as i7 5960X monsters.

Then I had a brainwave and figured it might be the reset switch on the case acting up, as exemplified by the connector in this picture.  Turned out to be the culprit.  A replacement reset switch is a bit cheaper than a whole new PC but I also figured that it in this day and age a reset switch is a) hardly ever used, and b) not something one want to press anyway.  It's not like we are in the days of DOS PCs when you could unplug power sockets without any danger of trashing the components.

My last P4-powered PC lasted 8 years.  This now-resurrected PC is only 4 years old so it has a while to go before I seriously need an upgrade.
