Consett's industrial ghosts
We walked along the River Derwent towards Allensford, past the Ironworks' pumping station, which must, at one time have returned gallons of pollution into the river. There had also been a 19th century paper mill and an ancient iron furnace. Now the river is fished, the old weirs forming deep, still ponds alternating with fast running stretches of shallow water. The trees are taller than those at Greencroft, but still seem amphibian.
