Bald as a coot

It's a funny expression really. Whilst they do have a marked white pate, they are most definitely well feathered all over, excepting the legs and feet. Not webbed feet but padded.

They are incredibly successful birds and present in huge numbers in pretty much any northern wetland. There are similar species on pretty much every continent except Antarctica (I think).
