SING at Stuyvesant High School - intermission

I took a whole bunch of shots of excited students during the intermission and performances and they were complete rubbish. Young people are as hard to shoot as wildlife, or maybe they are wild life.

This is a school event where classes (9th/10th grade, 11th, and 12th) compete against one another in creating and performing a musical from the ground up (writing the script, words for music, orchestration, tech, costumes, etc.) in a month. It is a grueling labor of love by kids who normally have 3-5 hours of homework a night anyway, but meet daily to perfect dance routines, polish script, and create a sparkling performance. In between there are undoubtedly moments of high terror (no thanks to the science teacher who perversely increased the homework) and hilarity (getting a mass food delivery delivered through an open school window, against the rules). Yet while the school is known for its competitiveness, to me it was a really great show of kids absolutely wanting to do their best, and great creative talent mixed in with all the math and science excellence for which this school is known. Also so very touching to see freshmen and know that they will be bordering on adulthood in a few years.
