Lake Havasu.....Wear'n the Green!

In the heat of the
winter sun, cactus blooms and
folks come out to play

~ carliewired

We arrived in Lake Havasu, Arizona about 4 PM yesterday. (Monday) We were already a day behind schedule and a bit of a late start in the day as well. Lunch was in Quarzite and we continued north on Hwy 95.

We called for reservations to an RV park as we were leaving Yuma. It made for a stress-free trip knowing we were assured of a spot in Lake Havasu. It was 86 Fahrenheit (30 celsius) when we set up the trailer and happily switched on the air conditioning. The wifi works just fine and we settled in for the evening.

Lake Havasu itself was created as a reservoir when the Parker Dam was added to the Colorado River in 1941.Lake Havasu City began its life as Army Air Corps rest camp during WW2. Today, it is a very busy tourist destination with most activities revolving around the lake. March sees wave after wave of college and university students here for some R and R. The winter months see many snowbirds, like us, enjoying the lake too.

We have driven past Lake Havasu as it is quite close to Yuma. We're either in a hurry to get to Yuma or we're leaving for home. We made a point of stopping on this return trip as there are some photo opportunities just waiting.

If you'd wondered what happened to the old London Bridge, you will find it here. It was purchased for $2.5 million and was transported with marked stones and reassembled for a further $7 million. It does look rather nice here.

Around the lake there are a number of replica lighthouses (small scale versions of other American lighthouses) that serve as navigational aides on the lake. They are about 2 dozen now and they are maintained by a group of interested citizens. We went in search of the lighthouses that were accessible to us. We hope to return to take a tour on the lake in order to photograph the rest.

My special find today was a shot of a male Gambel's quail, my absolute favourite bird. These little fellows can be found near water in the desert. I can see why Lake Havasu City would make them happy.

The beavertail cactus was blooming in the areas around the lake shore. Couldn't resist another shot of one.

As for the wear'n of the green......the lake itself is quite green, especially around its edges. I'm thinking it is algae bloom. It didn't seem to cause anyone any concern. It didn't smell badly. It just looked rather unattractive to me, in spite of St. Patrick's Day.
