Another Dutch culinary classic - stamppot

Ahh, the miracle food that is stamppot.  This, seemingly unassuming (and Dutch classic), dish is now a great favourite in our house, with husband and children alike and I have achieved something that has seemed to be, hitherto, impossible - the task of getting dark green cruciferous vegetables into my children!

It is basically a slightly more adventurous version of the British favourite, sausages and mash, but with one key difference: the fact that boerenkool (kale) is steamed on top of the potatoes as they cook and then the two are mashed together (along with other ingredients, such as cheese and butter).  Sausages are served on top of the mash and that is essentially it.  This particular version uses boerenkool - other vegetables can be used.  Whatever - it is comforting, edible winter heaven!

(I apologise to any Dutch friends reading this - the sausages I used are probably the wrong sort but that's what we had in the fridge!!)
