Balfron, Stirlingshire

This is the fine view you get going down the main street in Balfron - over to the Campsie Hills and Dumgoyne.

Legend has it that the village got its name from "bail-a-bhroin", meaning the town of mourning, after all the children were taken by wolves.

The outlaw folk hero Rob Roy Macgregor had associations with the area in the early 18th century, and later that century Balfron was transformed by the Industrial Revolution when a cotton mill was built. All that remains of that era are the street names - Cotton Street, Spinner Street and Weaver's Winnel.

Balfron was also the birthplace of the architect Alexander "Greek" Thomson, who designed several of the famous buildings in Glasgow.
