Wych Elm

They have been cutting down 50 year old elms infected with Dutch Elm disease near us.

These are - I am pretty sure - Wych Elm (ulmus glabra) flowers. I didn't realise it was the commonest elm in the UK rather than the field elm. The 'wych' comes from the old english 'wice' for 'pliant'' or 'supple' as in weak and wicker.

There are so many hedgeside plants starting to grow rapidly - goose grass, fat hen, jack in the pulpit and dandelions. And around here the invasive Alexanders - (smyrnium olusatram) that grow into huge Umbelliferae that swamp out everything else.
