Old Mine

From about 1720 until 1982 copper and sulphur were mined in the valley around Avoca Village. The legacy lives on in more ways than one. Mining related pollution has killed off life in the river from here to where it enters the sea at Arklow, the landscape is scarred with pits and tunnels and here we see one of the more picturesque aspects of that legacy. This old engine house, which housed what I believe was a "Williams Engine" is just one of several dotted around the valley.
