Not a Cutie

Continueing my series...'Cuties at the Dog Park' (well sort of)...let me introduce you to Snappy. Snappy is a Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina). She, or he, showed up at the Dog Park this morning. No doubt drawn to the ponds and probably hiding out in one of the brush piles on the property. 'Snappers' are "highly aquatic, like to rest in warm shallows and often lie buried in mud with only their eyes and nostrils exposed". Once discovered by the dogs, her quiet lifestyle was over. She was backed into a corner and was aggressively snapping at any dog that was silly enough to get near. Fearing that a dog might lose a paw, nose or eye, I realized that something had to be done, so I borrowed a bucket, scooped her up and relocated her at the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens. I released her in the most wonderful spot EVER! She is now safe and secure, within a short turtle walk to several ponds of her choosing. Or, if she is so inclined, she might decide to take the short hike to Lake Kanapaha itself. Ahhh...Snapping Turtle Heaven! Best of Luck and a long life to you, Snappy! :)
