Alte Nationalgalerie on Museum Island Berlin

The Prussian Kings and later German Emperors were determined to build a capital fit for their new Empire.  As part of this prestigious Museum complex was built on Museum Island in the centre of Berlin - 'a Louvre by the Spree'.

The Old National Gallery was built in strict neo-classical style, between 1867 and 1876, when it was opened by the Kaiser.  Its construction spanned the transition from Kingdom of Prussia to Second Reich.  It originally contained works by German artists but now covers neo-classical and romantic works generally.
