From the trap.......
I have had a busy day at home today, and as it was more cloudy I decided not to go out, which didn't matter, as I knew I already had my blip waiting for me in the fridge. This beautiful moth I caught in my trap last night is an Oak Beauty Biston strataria. A large - bodied and attractive spring flying species which is reasonably common in England and Wales, but scarcer in Scotland.
It is fairly large with a wingspan of 40 - 50 mm, and for those of you who know moths looks fairly similar to the closely related peppered moth Biston betularia, which flies later in the year from May to August.I am lucky enough to get both species in my little garden.... this is so exciting!
