Wild Atlantic Way
I went to see my pals who've returned from Budapest, and especially Michael who's undergoing cancer treatment since they came back. I got the train to Roscommon yesterday, and we went on to Galway for a bit of window shopping and a chat. Michael is much improved. Radiation treatment worked a treat on a nasty growth on his neck, and he's now in the final stages of a chemo course targeted on his lungs. His taste buds have been affected by the treatment, as has his voice box, which he's told will never fully recover. But he's in much better form than the last time I saw him.
We made a bit of a night of it back at their middle-of-nowhere cottage, having a bite to eat, watching TV and reminiscing. Michael had a chemo session this morning and they had to leave the house around 6:30 am. being very considerate on the way out and not disturbing me. David came back, we had breakfast and then went to the hospital, where Michael was next in line for chemo. We sat with him for a while and then we two went off to pass some time while he finished his treatment and settled down for a rest afterwards.
We'd intended hitting the shops in Galway, but the weather was glorious and David decided we'd go for a coastal drive instead. Salthill, Silver Strand, Spiddal all got a visit, with a wrong turning along the way bringing us to a gorgeous little cove where we stopped and I took some photos. Then it was turnaround time, back to the hospital, and more driving, this time through Moycullen and on to Oughterard for a takeaway stop, enjoying magnificent views over Lough Corrib on the way. We finally got back to the cottage after a lot of driving and a really fantastic day.
More chat, devouring of takeaway, TV, bed, finally, later than intended because we needed to be up and about around 7:30 to get me to the train station for my return to Dublin.
