Rough at sea
A night of strong winds and rain turned into a day with sunshine and showers.
The wind was blowy again this afternoon but it did nt stop the football match at the park taking place and there were plenty of golfers out on the course. It must have been a tricky game as the ball must have gone all over the place.
I was also surprised to see the boats out on the water. Plenty of safety RIBs around as most ended up having a soaking.
On Friday, after a very good meal at Brewers Fayre in Inverness we went to a talk by Saba Douglas Hamilton at Eden Court. Saba is an Elephant conservationist and TV presenter of programmes such as Big Cat Diaries . It was brilliant, really interesting to find out about her life in Kenya and the work of her father and how they are trying to 'save the elephant'. You might find this interesting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TifW-_mwwg.
She was saying that her Father really wanted to study lions but was sent to study the effects elephants had on crops and trees. He found that by putting wire around the trees it stopped the elephants from ripping off the bark and some of the trees still with the wire can be seen to this day. He also discovered that elephants can be identified by their ears, each one having different shapes with notches and scratches to id them. A bit like our dolphins with the marks on their dorsal fins. There is also one family of Elephants that has pink blotches so easy to tell which family they belong to. This family is called 'The Royals'.
Another interesting discovery has been made recently. Elephants are afraid of bees ! Although the bees would not be able to sting through a grown elephants skin they could a young one and could potentially kill it so they run away when they hear bees. This has been put to the advantage of farmers whose crops could be totally destroyed if an elephant decided to have it for it's dinner. So bee hives have now been placed along the fences and is working a treat. The Farmers also have the benefit of wonderful honey.
