Matilda
This morning we picked up Matilda (our new home for the next 11 days), left Perth and headed East. Directly East. We picked up the Eastern Highway and just kept going. The road is mostly straight. There was nothing in the way to cause the road builders to deviate so they didn't. On one side of the road is a huge pipe which takes drinking water from the Mundaring reservoir just outside Perth all the way to Kalgoorlie, a distance of about 400 miles. It must have been an enormous feat of engineering in the late 1800's and it's still used today. The terrain changes a little from bush to wheat field, to dried up salt lake and back to bush again but the pipe is always there. Amazing!
We had just over 200 miles to go to our first stop and we only came through about three or four towns. We stopped at a pie shop (apparently back home this week is "pie week" so it had to be done!!) in the middle of nowhere. Apparently this friendly Australian policeman must have heard about "pie week" too!!
