Roadheader
The noise and dust at the coalface must have been tremendous while this Roadheader machine was boring through rock. It replaced the efforts of many men who would have to spend days in dangerous conditions hewing tunnels or using explosives to get to the coal and it was able to travel at 15 feet a minute making tunnels and roadways. Now it lies outside the Scottish Mining Museum and no doubt looks much cleaner than the days when it was below ground and the mine was in operation.
